- Whisk milk, egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan until smooth.
- Heat over medium, whisking constantly until thick and glossy.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and butter.
- Slice bananas just before assembling.
- Layer wafers, bananas, and warm custard in a dish; repeat layers.
- Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Top with whipped cream before serving, if desired.
Notes
For best flavor, chill overnight. Use ripe but firm bananas.
