- Rinse and slice the dried beef.
- Melt butter in a skillet.
- Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes.
- Slowly add milk, whisking constantly until thickened.
- Stir in chipped beef, pepper, and nutmeg.
- Add cream if desired; thin with milk if needed.
- Spoon over toasted bread and serve warm.
Notes
Taste for salt after adding dried beef; it's naturally salty.
